Costa degli Etruschi is one of the most characteristic and peculiar areas of Tuscan Maremma. As its name, which translates into Coast of the Etruscans suggests, this is a stretch of land where many important settlements of Etruscan origin came to be as early as the 9th century BC, and the local archaeological sites and nearby necropolises narrate this fascinating millenary history. The Archaeological Park of Baratti, located between San Vincenzo and Piombino, is where the most significant evidence of the colonization of this area is stored and showcased. Costa degli Etruschi also includes the archaeological and naturalistic area of Parchi della Val di Cornia, the Coastal Park of Rimigliano and that of Sterpaia. The most astounding view of this area is represented by the gulf of Baratti, dominated by the fortress of Populonia, the only Etruscan city with access to the sea.
